The moment

A drilling permit is the earliest public document in the life of a well. It posts the day it's approved, weeks to months before a rig moves, and it names the operator, the lease, the county, the field, the depth and the shape of the hole.

The pad, the rig, casing and cement, mud, water and sand, flowback, tanks, trucking and the environmental work are all still to be lined up. The Cross Section tracks new permits, maps every well and keeps the operators you can reach, without the majors.

Who it's for

  • Drilling and completion service companies
  • Pressure pumping, wireline, casing and cement crews
  • Frac water, sand and disposal
  • Oilfield trucking and equipment rental
  • Landmen, title and environmental consultants
  • Oilfield insurance, surety and lenders

What you get

  • Drilling permits approved to reachable operators in your window
  • The lease, county, field and depth on the permit
  • Horizontal lateral length, measured on the map
  • The operator's other permits in the window
  • Majors, public independents and very large programs set aside

The outcome

Your completion crew bids with the depth and the lateral in hand, before the operator has filled its schedule. Your water and sand team sees which counties are stacking permits this month.

Questions buyers ask

Does every permit turn into a well?
No. A permit is permission, good for two years, and some are amended or never used. It's still the first record of what an operator plans.
Why leave out the majors?
They've got their own supply chains and vendor lists. The list is the operators where a new vendor can still get in.
Is there a dollar figure on each permit?
No. The permit carries none, so we don't show one. You get the depth and the lateral length instead.
